Christmas, Joyeux Noel - 2016

Tiny little baby
wise men came to see;
held by His mother,
come from eternity…
A miracle for all the people
and redeemer for our souls,
not for a day,
but in every way
with the Father, made us whole.
Though the winds have howled
and the leaders scowled
the shepherds came to bow –
so for all our times,
as the year goes round,
let’s remember to welcome Him – now.

Grandfather's Village - winter

In grandfather’s village the people pass by
my large window on the living room side.
All bundled in blankets of clothing so snug
it’s as if the snow were giving a hug.
My sisters and I watch them pass
and then disappear through our looking glass.
Their feet raise not into car nor carriage
but stay firmly upon the ground.
The distance they cover from day to day
is measured by footsteps with barely a sound.
Buildings square with angled eves
provide safe shelter unconditionally.
In grandfather’s village as evening draws near,
we retire to the kitchen which lies to the rear
and wait for our father to return to the nest;
there’s warmth with his presence
as he comes home to rest.
At night the men come to light the lamps
that twinkle like stars when seen from afar
and everyone sleeps with a blanket of hush
that quiets the body and mind’s anxious rush.
Slumbering dreams bed down with the coals
not stirred until morning into flames and souls.
In grandfather’s village each day is its own;
each person – a family –and each one has a home.
We hold on to each other, and to God’s good grace
and wish that everyone could live in such a place.

Puffs of Perfection - winter

Puffs of perfection
this white moisture falls,
packing and protecting the plants
from the cold.
You sit in silence,
our world to wrap
within your presence
and frosty tap.
Stay for awhile that we may sip
of your dainty morsels
as together we sit
whether for a few hours
or days on end
I relish your giving
and the peace that you send.

Return to Eden - winter

The faint stirrings
of light and birdsong
signal the morn,
just as in Eden –
a new day is born.
Shafts of sun
through drifting mist
as the forest floor was lit
to comfort human spirit
with gentle assurance
our eyes would upward lift…
oh to have lived a single day
with such communion and in such bliss;
surely His salvation to us all
holds a return to such as this.

Walk on Water - fall

You didn’t sink and you didn’t fly,
You came for us to see you eye to eye.
You weren’t above and You weren’t below
You walked on the water
where no one else could go.
No wonder Peter was drawn toward,
no wonder compelled to try,
for a Lord to have humbled himself so
is to draw us to Your side.
So take us to Your Holy mountain
or simply grasp us by the hand,
Truly You were Almighty God
come from the sun and stars
to walk as mortal man.

Breath of Autumn-fall

The breath of autumn
has swept through the land,
unloading the leaves
where the trees still stand.
A miracle actually
that they return
like a new day dawning
and life relearned.
No matter what's been taken from you
get up the next day and follow through.
Whatever is missing
or been denied
can be refilled
by God, from inside.

Canopy - fall

I look at the trees
and I can see
a wounded back against the bark
and Your arms as the branches,
unprotected,
spread out for me.

God, You are our canopy
You form loving arms
that reach out to me.
I walk through the beauty of these,
the color of the trees,
and know Your Love
that Your creation allows us to see
Jesus -
be my canopy.

I’m following the path
Your arching arms are leading me through;
knowing that it’s You.
The Son shows His colors
and we sense His Truth
that we bring only ourselves
to His banquet anew.
His bounty abounds above my head –
Jesus feed me and fall all about
as I treasure Your measure of Love poured out.

God, You are our canopy
You form loving arms
that reach out to me.
I walk through the beauty of these,
the color of the trees,
and know Your Love
that Your creation allows us to see
Jesus -
be my canopy.
